How to install Software Drivers

Adding and Removing Software Drivers
in Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98

All hardware devices used in Computers and Laptops require software known as drivers to function correctly.  Software Drivers are software that lets your Computer and/or Laptop know that the computer hardware device exists and what to do with it.

In Microsoft Windows XP/ME/2000/98/95, you must first un-install (remove), any existing drivers for that device prior to installing a new one.  You accomplish this through the Windows Control Panel.  Follow these steps to remove/replace a components existing driver.

1.   Go to START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.

2.   Click on the SYSTEM Icon, you may have to arrow down to the bottom of the page.

3.   Click on the DEVICE MANAGER Tab.

4.   Click on the device you you want to remove and then click on REMOVE at the bottom of the screen. Once the device is removed shut down the computer and restart. Windows should use it’s plug-and-play feature to recognize the new device and ask you for a driver.
