How to Swap the Drives in Dell Latitude Laptops

This information on how to swap the drives in Dell Latitude Laptops covers the method by which to change the Modular CDROM drive and the Modular Floppy drive in the Modular Bay.  The models that I am aware of that this covers is the Dell Latitude CP series (CP, CPi, CPt, CPx, and more).  This is the most commonly ask question on our tech support line.  The Dell Latitude CPi series laptops all use the same type of CDROM and Floppy Drives.  As with all refurbished laptops or used laptops there are some weakness' to this model which I describe at the bottom of this page.

In most cases refurbished laptops or used laptops do not include manuals.  If you purchase a refurbished or used laptop manuals are usually available online at the manufacture website.  In this case if your used laptops or refurbished laptop is a dell simply surf your way to www.dell.com  use the support link.  Just follow the links to the manual downloads.

1.  Make sure that you have your Dell Latitude Laptop is powered off and the Notebook AC adapter unplugged from the laptop. (We are using the M233ST model for these pictures)

2.  Turn the Dell Latitude Laptop over so that you have the bottom facing up. (See Picture)

6.  Take the drive and slide it into the modular bay making sure that you have it correctly positioned in the bay (The drive will only fit one way do not force it)

The Dell Latitude CP Laptops weakness'

Dell Latitudes are easy to work with and the drives in the Latitudes are sturdy and dependable.  I would like to say that of the 2 things that we at Bob Johnson's Computer Stuff deal with on these Dell Latitude CP Laptops are these sliding latches and the screen latch.  It seems that the spring loaded drive and  battery latch can come loose and if you are not careful will fall off.  I have tried to purchase the latches from Dell directly but have not been able to get them.  The screen latch which holds the screen down when closed can break on the Dell Latitude CP (mostly the M233ST 12" screen version)  Dell used a plastic hook latch which if not properly closed can break off.  I have this lid latch for purchase if you need one.  When they designed the 13 inch screen models like on the D266XT they used a metal hook latch which is less likely to break.  Later they improved the drive latches like in the Dell Latitude C600 laptops.
