With the fully rugged Toughbook CF-19 MK 5, we see several notable improvements upon its MK 4 predecessor. For starters, it packs a punch with its Intel Core i5 2520M processor built on the Sandy Bridge architecture.
This second generation i5 CPU greatly outperforms the first generation, dubbed Arrandale. With its Turbo Boost technology, this 2.5GHz dual core processor can reach 3GHz with both cores active and 3.2GHz with one core. The i5 2520m also boasts an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 card, which is much faster than the Arrandale equivalent. The Sandy Bridge architecture also improves upon the DDR3 RAM controller.
What does all this mean? In short, it means more power.
The next big improvement we see with the i5 is in its stunning, daylight-readable display. While the CF-19 MK 4 brought us the incredibly bright 1,000-nit backlight, Panasonic has come up with something really ingenious in the CF19 MK 5.
In addition to the backlight, they've added a reflective layer that harnesses ambient light to further illuminate the screen. In direct sunlight, the display on a CF-19 MK 5 can reach an unheard of 6000-nit luminance. To put that into perspective, most laptop screens max out at about 400 nits.
